Frequently Asked Questions
46 detailed questions about Akkan Maritime — our services, expertise, international representations, AI-powered services, green finance vision, Turkey investment advisory, and how we work.
Akkan Maritime A.Ş. is a boutique maritime services company based in Tuzla, Istanbul, founded by naval architect İlker Ertuğrul Akkan. Operating as a "Maritime House," the firm provides newbuilding brokerage, ship sale & purchase (S&P), repair brokerage, naval architecture, project management, and offshore operations consulting under a single point of contact. The company is recognized for trust-based client relationships, deep risk analysis capability, and execution of complex maritime projects.
Akkan Maritime is headquartered in Tuzla, Istanbul. Company evolution:
Our staffing model is project-based — for each project we form specialized teams with the most experienced engineers and subcontractors in the industry. This structure allows dynamic scaling based on project intensity and the most appropriate expertise combination per project.
What sets Akkan Maritime apart is direct experience earned at every level of shipbuilding — both in the field and the office, at the heart of heavy industry. Across a wide spectrum from shipyard construction to challenging newbuilding projects, working with senior industry leaders, international maritime lawyers and seasoned maritime professionals has built our technical and negotiation capability. This positions us not merely as brokers, but as the technical proxy of the project. Most importantly: experience earned in tough projects at an early age has been preserved without compromising ethical values — and translated into concrete successes recognized across Turkey.
Akkan Maritime's philosophy can be summarized in one sentence: deliver the right work, at the right time, at the right price, with the right quality.
Core values:
We've seen the concrete outputs of this approach in every reference project: with our clients we don't just build ships — we build new bridges of trust between countries and sectors.
İlker Ertuğrul Akkan was born in Gelibolu — the same city as Piri Reis — in the early 1980s. He is a first-generation naval architect. His father is a TSK (Turkish Armed Forces) tank and engine technician with deep expertise in tanks and high-capacity diesel engines in inventory. His mother is a fashion design and clothing teacher; his technical and design abilities come from his genes.
Education: In 1999 he was accepted to both the Turkish Naval Academy and Yıldız Technical University Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture (English program, evening track). After a brief Naval Academy experience, he chose to continue at Yıldız Technical, graduating in 2006 from Yıldız Technical University, Department of Naval Architecture. Chamber of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers (GMO) Member No: 2086.
Professional career: Thanks to YTÜ being an evening program with free daytime, his professional career began in 2002 at a steel subcontractor. From 2002–2006 he worked across manufacturing engineering, nesting, fabrication drawings, digital shipyard layout drawings, 3D yacht engine room design.
From 2006–2008 at Kaptanoğlu-Desan Shipyard as design engineer, design coordinator, and project manager — including the 3-vessel delivery project for Danish owner Rederiet Simonsen ApS as shipyard design coordinator.
In 2012 he founded IEA Naval Architecture as sole proprietorship. In 2018, after the FV Daria project achieved national-level recognition, he founded Akkan Denizcilik Ticaret A.Ş. as sole shareholder. Since entering the industry, has delivered 70+ projects.
2002 — Industry entry: Site engineering at steel subcontractor, in parallel with university.
2002–2006 — Freelance & design offices: Manufacturing engineering, nesting, fabrication drawings, digital shipyard layout drawings, 3D yacht engine room design. (Clients from this period are not disclosed due to commercial confidentiality.)
2006–2008 — Kaptanoğlu / Desan Shipyard:
2012– Akkan Maritime: Founder & Managing Director.
Akkan Maritime's main services are organized in 8 categories:
Under development: Akkan Green Bridge (green maritime finance platform, planned 2026 Q4).
The newbuilding brokerage process operates in 5 stages:
Stage 1 — Design readiness assessment: Whether the client has a tender-ready design package is evaluated. If not, design consultancy is provided first.
Stage 2 — Client profile and project requirements: Cost, quality and delivery time criteria are defined. The client's working style and shipyard compatibility are analyzed.
Stage 3 — Shipyard selection (A-B-C class): Three different tier shipyards are selected matching the client's profile:
Tenders are obtained from each tier and presented to the client with comparative analysis.
Stage 4 — Contract and financial structuring: Technical and commercial negotiations with the agreed shipyard, contract signing.
Stage 5 — Site supervision: The construction process — including the designer — is observed within the commercial, technical and timing limits set by the client. Errors are prevented before they occur, efficiency losses are minimized.
Outcome: A win-win-win structure where all parties — client, shipyard, subcontractors — leave the project satisfied.
Commercial vessels: Bulk carrier (Handysize → Capesize), Chemical tanker (IMO II/III), Oil tanker (MR, Suezmax, VLCC), Livestock carrier, RoRo / RoPax / Ferry, Container vessel
Fishing vessels: Fresh fish trawler (ORCA 35), Freezing trawler (ORCA 45/55), Factory fishing vessel, Longliner
Offshore & workboat: Tug boat, OSV, PSV, CTV, Anti-pollution vessel, Push boat, Work boat
Luxury & yacht: Aluminium luxury power catamaran (Spartan 44), Mega yacht, Super yacht, Day cruiser
Special projects & conversion: FSO/FPSO conversion, Major ship conversion, Floating drydock, Research vessel
Green transition: Hybrid propulsion vessels, Full-electric ferry & catamaran, Zero emission designs
Akkan Maritime has active working experience with all major IACS member classification societies. We have first-hand contacts based on market:

Akkan Green Bridge is the green maritime services framework Akkan Maritime is planning to launch in 2026 Q4. It is currently in design and development phase, not yet operational.
Planned service scope:
These services are based on Akkan Maritime's 25+ years of energy efficiency experience and past trim optimization & energy efficiency projects (Beşiktaş Group, Lady series, Ulusoy 12-14, etc.).
Note: This is informational service description, not investment advice. Final product structure, pricing and financial terms will be clarified upon completion of regulatory approval processes. Two indicative bond structures are being developed under Akkan Green Bridge:
Retrofit Bond (short-medium term, pooled structure):
Newbuild Green Bond (long-term, project-based):
Common feature of both structures: EU Green Bond Standard compliance and LGX listing target.
These statements are indicative for product structures in design phase. Binding terms will be in final documentation.Akkan Green Bridge participation is planned in 4 stages:
Stage 1 — Letter of Interest: Owner submits LOI with summary fleet information.
Stage 2 — Fleet monitoring & analysis: Akkan Maritime monitors the fleet on monthly subscription model. Daily operational data (fuel consumption, speed, charter routes) collected from each vessel and cross-checked against vessel design properties.
Stage 3 — Retrofit potential report: Analysis output reports which vessels are suitable for inclusion, expected improvement potential, and indicative investment size to the owner.
Stage 4 — Bond participation: Suitable vessels are included in the Akkan Green Bridge bond structure. Final participation terms will clarify with regulatory approval process.
Indicative minimum requirements:
Primary risk factors:
Our risk mitigation structure:
Conclusion: When risk is properly managed, targeted savings translate into measurable success and a "win-win-win" structure (investor + owner + environment) emerges.
Final investor documentation (Prospectus, SPO, Use of Proceeds Framework) will be shared with investors upon completion of regulatory process. Information on this page is not binding. Our AI-powered vessel valuation & survey reporting differs from traditional survey in 4 main aspects:
1. Speed: Traditional 4 working days → AI-supported 1-2 working days
2. Scope: Traditional report + historical market data comparison + structural risk scoring + class compliance pre-assessment
3. Comparative analysis: AI models analyze last 5 years of S&P transactions for similar vessels to provide price range — data-intensive comparison impossible for manual surveyors.
4. Risk scoring: Steel thickness measurements, corrosion trend analysis, fatigue indicators evaluated by AI — not just "good/bad" but numerical risk score.
Akkan's added value: AI output is always reviewed by a naval architect; final report delivered as a hybrid product. AI increases information density, human experience guarantees interpretation accuracy.
We offer 3 service tiers:
Standard Report
Comprehensive Report
Pre-purchase Due Diligence
Pricing is determined per project scope in private discussion.
Our AI-supported maritime finance modeling is particularly valuable for 3 client profiles:
1. Fleet modernization owners (5+ vessel owners): Owners deciding on CII improvement investment, dual-fuel conversion or green newbuilding can see numerically:
2. Green bond investment decision-makers: Bond structure feasibility, IRR scenarios, FuelEU & EU ETS impact modeling.
3. Shipyards & construction contractors: Customer financing options for newbuilding contracts, ROI presentations for retrofit offers.

Stage 2 — Fleet evaluation: CII, EEXI compliance, remaining economic life, retrofit potential, sell-and-replace analysis for each vessel
Stage 3 — Modernization roadmap: Multi-year plan
Stage 4 — Financing structuring: Bank loan / Retrofit Bond / Newbuild Green Bond / hybrid structures
Stage 5 — Implementation & monitoring
Indicative minimum requirements: Sufficient equity, stable operations, 3+ vessel fleet, transparent data.
Minimum investment structure (indicative):
Tax advantages (Turkish investor perspective):
Legal framework:
Important note: Akkan Maritime does not provide financial or tax advisory. Above information summarizes general industry practices. Before investment decision, consultation from licensed tax advisor, legal advisor and investment advisor is mandatory.
3 macro trends create investment opportunities for the next 3-5 years:
1. Fleet Renewal Cycle: Renewal period for bulk carrier, tanker and container segments
2. Green Transition & Finance: CII, EEXI, FuelEU, EU ETS regulations create retrofit and green newbuilding opportunities; carbon market and green bond market offer attractive financing models
3. Turkey's Position: 4th largest shipbuilding capacity globally, Tuzla cost advantage, qualified workforce, proximity to European market
Conclusion: Investment opportunities in newbuilding, second-hand and retrofit projects with Green Finance solutions will likely accelerate over the next 3-5 years.
CII, EEXI and FuelEU regulations are not just environmental protection — they are rewriting commercial competition rules in maritime.
Regulatory framework: EEXI (2023+), CII (annual A-E rating), FuelEU Maritime (2025+), EU ETS
Short-term pressure: Retrofit investment in older vessels, charter rate pressure on inefficient vessels, value loss of overaged vessels
Medium-long term opportunity: Green-notation vessels preferred by charterers (higher charter rates), easier green financing access (LGX, SLB), carbon market advantage, advantage for technology-producing countries
Strategic recommendation: Analyze CII trajectory of each vessel in fleet, identify critical transition years, decide retrofit or sale proactively. Akkan Maritime supports as both technical and financial advisor.
1. Rederiet Simonsen ApS — 3× IMO II Chemical Tanker (2006–2008): 3-vessel delivery to Danish owner. The project had become a technical-legal deadlock that led to the shipyard's bankruptcy. Prof. Dr. Yücel Odabaşı supported the project. ICE Class 1-A requirements were the most critical technical aspect.
2. ORIENT-1 — PCC → 5,200 SQM Livestock Carrier Major Conversion: Record-time conversion. 1.5 million m³ ventilation, 120 t/day Reverse Osmosis, 20 km animal pen construction, 880 ton feed tank + automatic feeding system. Result: Animal mortality reduced to 0.01% per voyage; vessel purchased by Vroon Shipping as Holstein Express. Charter income 19,500 USD/day. Delivered in 10 months under IACS (RINA) class supervision.

5. Iceland Longliner — GK 9 (2022): 13.6m DNV-classed steel-hull commercial fishing longliner — built as Spartan 1, renamed GK 9 by the Icelandic operator on arrival. 3rd Turkish company to export a vessel to Iceland.
6. ALU Hybrid-Electric Catamaran — Spartan 44 (2023–2024): 90% recyclable aluminium hull, full-electric and hybrid options, catamaran design with car-level fuel consumption or zero emissions. Target markets: Turkey, USA, Europe.
FV Daria (ex-FV Ocean Concorde) was the turning point that opened Akkan Maritime to the Arctic & Barents Sea fishing market. Three strategic outcomes:
The Akkan trustee finance model was applied at full scale for the first time in this project: bank-guarantee-free, prepayment + staged subcontractor payment structure.
Akkan's Iceland engagement spans two distinct projects.
Iceland Shipyard Design & Infrastructure Investment (2021): A world-first procedure for designing, prefabricating, and rapid-assembling large-scale reinforced concrete structures across two countries. The complete engineering and design package was delivered to the client and formally accepted. The structural design accommodated 80 km/h sustained winds without overturning, continuous seismic action, and a 100-year service life with Eurocode-compliant concrete chemistry.
Iceland Longliner — GK 9 (2022): A 13.6m DNV-classed steel-hull commercial fishing longliner. Built as Spartan 1 in Türkiye, the vessel was renamed GK 9 by the Icelandic operator upon arrival.
Strategic significance:
Spartan 44 is positioned as the Scandinavian quality version of its segment: solid aluminium hull, simple functional design, eco-friendly propulsion options (full electric / hybrid / diesel), characterful lines.
Target client profile:
Target geographies:
Internationally launched at Cannes Yachting Festival (2024). Full equipment package offered at competitive price.

Greek shipping market — accounting for 20%+ of global vessel ownership — is the heart artery of the sector. Akkan Maritime's relationship with Greek owners is built on 4 foundations:
1. Loading Instrument Software references: Akkan and our founding engineering team has approved loading instrument software delivery on 126+ Greek owner vessels. This reference provides direct technical trust in the Greek market.
2. FAS exclusive representation: Being FAS exclusive representative for Turkey + Greece provides regular contact with Greek owners. Met face-to-face with Greek owners under FAS booth at Posidonia 2018 and 2022.
3. DSIC-Shanhaiguan Chinese shipyard access: Greek owners know and actively use Chinese shipyards — particularly professionals who can value paint quality importance. Our DSIC official representation creates direct value in Greek market.
4. Regular field presence in Piraeus: Marine Money Athens, Posidonia, broker dinners, direct owner visits — continuous presence in Piraeus and Athens.
The Scandinavian market (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Faroe) is both technological and strategic priority for Akkan Maritime:
1. Technology leadership: Scandinavian owners and shipyards are world leaders in green transition, hybrid/electric propulsion, digitalization. Natural client base for Akkan's AI services, ALU Hybrid-Electric Catamaran design and Akkan Green Bridge platform.
2. FAS representation: Strongest channel in Scandinavian flag market — particularly tax treaty advantages for Turkish owners.
3. Active project references: M/F Utne (Norway, 49m ferry), FV Daria (Arctic operation), SKN Iceland drydock + longliner, Donsö Shipping Meet (Sweden, FAS booth annually), Nor-Shipping (Oslo).
4. Green finance axis geography: Luxembourg + Copenhagen + Brussels axis is the extension of Scandinavian green finance ecosystem. Akkan Green Bridge LGX listing target is direct integration with this market's financial infrastructure.
5. Professional culture alignment: Scandinavian work culture — transparency, commitment reliability, ethical standards, long-term relationships — aligns perfectly with Akkan Maritime's core values.
We listen to client requests in the best way. We submit our proposals in areas where we can add value. Once approved, we adopt every project as if it were our own and work with all our power to deliver before commitment time and beyond expected quality.
Typical process after first contact:
No fee charged at first contact; pricing only after concrete work scope defined.
We sign contracts in S&P and other brokerage work after preliminary offer. We conduct all transactions with full transparency.
Our broker positioning:
Our transparency principles:
When undertaking trustee party role in newbuilding and major projects, payments to subcontractors are made in stages — after client delivery and approval.
Duration varies by project type and content.
Brokerage projects:
Technical projects:
Particularly noteworthy: we complete major ship conversion projects in record times — ORIENT-1 livestock conversion 10 months, FV Ocean Concorde → FV Daria 10 months, Iceland 13.6m longliner 6 months are all significantly below sector average.
In emergencies, our 24/7 reachable project managers can take rapid action. For example, in shipyard accidents, we react very quickly on issues such as hospital selection or organization; we keep the situation under control.
Typical emergency interventions:
Our reaction protocol: First 1 hour: situation assessment + all parties informed. First 4 hours: action plan presentation. First 24 hours: concrete steps for damage/risk minimization. Subsequent: transparent daily reporting.
I don't think it's right to label ourselves as the best ship building broker in Turkey. But we can set a concrete criterion: thanks to our actions and stance during a project — in the most important major ship conversion project where many disputed issues arose between client and shipyard — we are the only ship building broker that succeeded in receiving thanks from both shipyard and owner, and even won the trust and appreciation of both parties as trustee in legal processes.
Our vision is to be Turkey's most trusted ship building broker — trust share, not market share, is our priority. References accumulated in 70+ projects and the long-term relationships built with our clients are concrete evidence of this.
For Greek owners seeking Turkish shipyard brokerage, Akkan Maritime offers 4 first-hand strategic advantages:
1. Dual-channel shipyard access: Direct access to both Turkish shipyard network (Tuzla HQ) and DSIC-Shanhaiguan Chinese shipyard (as Turkey & Greece official representative). Possibility of obtaining offers from two different markets simultaneously.
2. Loading instrument software reference: 126+ approved loading instrument software deliveries on Greek owner vessels — our technical credibility in Greek market is based on a concrete reference.
3. FAS flag advantage: Faroe Islands Ship Registry exclusive representation offers Greek owners Scandinavian market integration and double taxation treaty advantages.
4. Regular field presence in Piraeus: Marine Money Athens, Posidonia, broker dinners — continuous presence provides instant access to Greek market.
Akkan's value proposition for Greek owners: Cost advantage of Turkish shipyards + China's large-scale capacity + Scandinavian flag structure + first-hand broker access — through a single point of contact.
